Chapter Philanthropy

In addition to the MMM, the Xi Omicron chapter has a number of local philanthropies.

Stage Handing

The biggest philanthropy the chapter participates in is stage managing the recitals and concerts. Providing stage hands for every music event is the chapter’s way of giving back to the music department. The brothers also help out at music department events such as audition days and scholarship night. Each year the music department also hosts State Solo & Ensemble which the brothers volunteer for by setting up rooms, running tables and monitoring event rooms. Solo & Ensemble is also the chapter’s biggest fundraiser of the year, with the brothers selling food and drinks all day long.

Honor Flight

Another philanthropy is the Honors Flight. Each semester, numerous brothers head over to the Central Wisconsin Airport in Wausau, WI for the Honors Flight landing. Honors Flight is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to transport America’s Veterans to Washington, DC to visit those memorials dedicated to honor the service and sacrifices of themselves and their friends. There are 130 Honors Flight hubs in the U.S. and the Xi Omicron chapter is lucky enough to be near one of them. The brothers head over there with instruments in hand and play music as the veterans walk off the plane. The veterans walk into patriotic music from the band while being greeted by family, friends and other loved ones. If a brother doesn’t have an instrument to play, he joins the parade of people greeting and thanking each veteran as they enter.

Philanthropic Donations

In addition to the Honors Flight, the brothers of the Xi Omicron chapter donate to at least one music orientated philanthropy a semester. The chapter has donated to high school band programs, community bands and orchestras, nonprofits, specific students and more. The chapter also has a few scholarships, including one for a promising high school student who attends the COFAC band camp during the summer. In the spring semester, the brothers vote on an alumnus of the chapter who deserves a chair in Michelsen Hall and they pay for an armrest plate for him.

The Xi Omicron participates in many philanthropies outside of the ones listed. The brothers have joint philanthropy events with other fraternities and organizations on campus. The Fundraising/Philanthropy Chair also comes up with one fundraiser and one philanthropy a semester. These events have ranged from video game competitions to turkey bowls to No Shave November.
